Universal Avaya IP Phone Troubleshooting

Most Common Issues & Messages

“Discover xxxx.xxxx.xxxx” or waiting for DHCP: Check VLAN settings; ensure phone is on correct voice VLAN; reboot switch port.
“No VPN” or “VPN Failed”: Wrong credentials or server IP; check 46VPN settings in craft menu.
Blank screen / No display: PoE power issue (needs 802.3af or higher); try known good cable/port.
“Subnet conflict”: Phone received IP on wrong subnet; disable data VLAN or fix DHCP scope.
Headset not working: Enable “Headset Signaling” in phone settings; use EHS cable for wireless headsets.
Can’t log in (extension mobility): Wrong credentials; check FAC in Communication Manager.

J100 Series Specific (J129, J139, J159, J169, J179)

Wi-Fi not connecting (J159/J169/J179): Hold Mute + 4 + 7 + 4 sec → Wi-Fi settings → ensure 2.4 GHz.
Phone stuck on “Initializing”: Reset to factory: Hold OK + * + 728368# during boot.
Missing features (no call park, etc.): Update to latest SIP firmware from Avaya Support.

9600 Series (H.323) Specific

Enter Craft mode: Press MUTE + 27238# (CRAFT#)
Reset to factory: In Craft → CLEAR → enter.
Force upgrade: In Craft → ADDR → set correct 46XX settings file path.

Safety note: Never change settings without proper authorization. Incorrect VLAN or SIP server settings can take the phone offline.
